Welcome to Winkelman's Young Scholars Gifted Program!
Young Scholars is a program for fifth grade students in District 31 who have been identified as gifted according to criteria involving MAP test scores, CogAt score (aptitude), and teacher recommendation (“Observation Checklist”). The Young Scholars program generally serves students in the top 5-7 percent of the local school population.
Fifth graders meet four periods each week to engage in challenging literacy activities, including investigations of novels, historical fiction, biography, and other full-length literary forms. They also conduct in-depth studies of historic periods such as the explorations of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and immigration through Ellis Island.
